Braided Clothes Line

These clotheslines are extremely useful in refugee camps.  They are used to both tie up plarn mats/bedrolls, and they have another purpose as a rope to hang laundry from.  We donate these to Launfal Foundation and Lifting Hands International for use in refugee camps.

Materials

  1. Good pair of scissors

  2. Clean grocery bags without holes.  Thicker, bigger (from clothing stores or takeout) bags cannot be used for this project.

Instructions

  1. Lay out each bag, tucking in the bottom pleats and smoothing out wrinkles.

  2. Place three bags on top of each other, lining up the bottoms.

  3. Fold bags in half lengthwise, and cut one inch from the bottom (*Be sure to cut a full inch above the pleats) and one inch below the lowest point of the loop at top. The cuts should be even and straight.

  4. Cut each bag in half width wise.

  5. Tie three into a knot, leaving about a 1” loop at the top.

  6. Hang the loop on a hook, or tape the loop to a wall or table.

  7. Begin braiding the loops into one braid.

  8. Add loops with a slip knot and continue braiding until the clothesline measures 4.5 yards long.

  9. Roll into a ball, and slip a rubber band around to secure the clothesline.
