Dolls of Hope Teddy Bears

These sweet little bears are made by hand and sent to refugee camps worldwide by an organization created by Sarah Carmichael Parsons called Dolls of Hope.


Materials

  • Flannel fabric of a light color to show face of bear (about 1/3 yard)

  • Fleece fabric (1/3 yard of matching color to the face.

  • Black embroidery floss

  • Embroidery needle

  • Embroidery hoop

  • Black felt for nose (about 1 square inch)

  • Blue water-soluble fabric marker

  • Fabric scissors

  • Sewing machine

  • Chopstick or other blunt edged stick

  • Stuffing (Poly-fil or fiberfill)

Instructions

1. Print pattern, tape pages together and cut around the outline

2. Place pattern on the WRONG side of the flannel

3. Trace a solid line around the pattern using the water soluble pen. Trace a dotted line about ¼” around the solid line for a cutting guide (this will leave a quarter inch seam allowance)

4. Cut along THE DOTTED LINE.

5. Tape the pattern to a widow or a light box.

6. Tape the cut flannel bear right-side facing you over the bear to see the face. Trace face with water-soluble pen.

7. Put an embroidery hoop over the face to make it tight.

8. Thread a needle with two or three strands of embroidery floss, tie a knot in the end of the thread, and begin stitching the eyes with a satin stitch. Here is an Embroidery Stitching Guide

9. Cut a nose out of black felt and sew SECURELY ON with black floss.  If not sewn properly, it can be a choking hazard for the little child who might pull it off.
